Bone Marrow Donation

Want to be a HERO?
It starts with a simple swab of the cheek at our Life Connection Center...

Open Wednesdays from 9am-5pm
Other Days by appointment only

Can You Help?  If you are between 18 and 60 years old and generally in good health, you could be the one to save a life.

Did you know?

  • 70% of patients needing a marrow transplant do not have a matching donor in their family

  • There are 10,000 patients each year whose only hope for a cure is a transplant from someone outside of their family

  • Only 28% of registry members are of diverse racial or ethnic heritage

  • Less than 4 out of 10 patients receive the transplant they need due to barriers such as lack of a matching donor, inability to pay for the healthcare costs and other factors.

or
Thank you for supporting us as we continue meeting the needs of the families we serve.
Fact:  Some donations involve surgery and some do not.  The patient's doctor requests either a marrow donation, a surgical procedure, or a peripheral blood stem cells donation, which is non-surgical.
Myth:  Pieces of bone are removed from the donor.
FactNo pieces of bone are removed in marrow donation.  Only the liquid marrow found inside the bones is needed to save the patient's life.
Myth: Donating marrow is dangerous and weakens the donor.
Fact: Though no medical procedure is without risk, there are rarely any long term effects from donating marrow.  After donation, the body replaces marrow within four to six weeks.
Myth: Marrow donation involves a lengthy recovery.
FactMost donors are back to their normal routine within a few days.  Marrow donors can expect to feel some soreness in their lower back for several day or longer.  They may feel tired or experience some discomfort walking for a short time before symptoms disappear.
Myth: Donors have to pay for costs associated with donation.
FactDonors never pay for donation.  All medical costs are covered by the patient's medical insurance, sometimes with National Marrow Donor Program assistance.  Donors are also reimbursed for travel expenses.
